We are here to provide tools, guidance, and resources needed to implement effective heat safety protocols. From training materials to wellness initiatives, VertiSource HR is here to support your organization in protecting your workforce and maintaining compliance with workplace safety standards.

Staying Safe in a Heat Advisory

Due to high temperatures, a heat advisory has been issued. These are imposed when high temperatures pose significant health risks.

At Vertisource HR, we prioritize helping employers understand and meet their responsibilities when it comes to heat safety in the workplace. For example, consider postponing or rescheduling outdoor activities, especially during peak heat hours. If being outside is a requirement, hydration is key! Also, take frequent breaks in shaded areas and avoid prolonged exposure. Additionally, whenever possible, remain in a cool, air-conditioned space during the hottest parts of the day and evening.

While there’s no specific federal heat standard, OSHA enforces heat protection under the General Duty Clause and leans on guidance from NIOSH. Employers are expected to address known heat-related risks through existing regulations—such as those concerning personal protective equipment and recordkeeping. Additionally, states like California, Oregon, and Washington have implemented their own heat illness prevention standards, including mandatory access to water, shade, and training when temperatures rise.

The good news? Heat-related illnesses are entirely preventable with the right precautions. Acting quickly when symptoms like dizziness, nausea, or excessive sweating occur can prevent serious health issues, reduce downtime, and protect workers’ compensation eligibility.

VertiSource HR is here to support your business with the policies, training, and tools you need to keep your team safe. This summer, let’s stay cool, stay informed, and work together for a healthier workplace.
