NYC Employers: Workers’ Bill of Rights Distribution Deadline is July 1st

The highly anticipated Workers’ Bill of Rights was recently published by NYC officials, and businesses must provide a copy to new and current employees by July 1, 2024.

The Bill of Rights

The Bill of Rights is an internet-based reference tool that NYC employees, applicants, and independent contractors can access. This tool details workplace rights and protections for these individuals. Some topics covered in this tool are sick leave, minimum wage requirements, union rights, and many others.

What to Expect Next

With the Bill of Rights officially published, employers must be prepared for what’s to come.

Businesses have until July 1 to post a notice of the Bill of Rights to employees and new hires, which is a QR code that links directly to the website. The notice must be distributed and placed in an area that is easily accessible and visible to all employees. If any business relies on a website or app for regular communication, it must also be posted there.

Furthermore, the Bill of Rights must be posted in English and any primary language spoken by at least 5% of the workforce (if it has been published in said language).

If an employer fails to comply with these requirements, there is a possible $500 penalty.
